Matthews Sussex Ltd were appointed by Viridor Waste Management to undertake the engineering and restoration contract to complete their Horton Landfill site at Smalldole in West Susssex .
This contract involved the excavation, transportation and engineered placement of 250000m3 of engineering clay from a site in Croydon , the raising of the sites gas wells to accommodate the finished levels and the construction of the surface water drainage system .
50 tipper trucks were employed to transport the clay with 2 dozers and 2 self-propelled compactors placing the material to comply with the Viridors stringent quality assurance and validation requirements to insure the clays optimum moisture content and compaction was achieved at all times .
Upon completion of the clay capping a further 270000m3 of clean inert restoration soils were imported to complete the site and return it to agriculture open space.
The contract was completed on programme and within budget.
